From an Aging Deck to 1,800+ Square Feet of Outdoor Living in Chester County

Sometimes, getting more out of your backyard starts with taking away what is no longer working.

For this recent Chester County project, our client had an aging wood deck that had begun to rot and an outdoor space with much more potential than usable square footage. The goal was to rethink the area from the ground up – replacing the deck with a large, thoughtfully designed patio while addressing drainage, elevation changes, lighting, landscaping, and the way the new space connected to the rest of the property.

The finished project includes more than 1,800 square feet of Techo-Bloc pavers and natural flagstone, creating an outdoor living area that feels like it was always meant to be part of the home.

Planning a New Patio in Chester County Around the Property

Before the first paver goes down, a successful patio project starts with understanding the property itself.

On a project of this size, grading and drainage are every bit as important as choosing the materials. The existing elevations around this home, combined with plans to repave the driveway, meant that each part of the project needed to work together.

Our team redirected the home’s drainage downspouts and worked with the driveway paving contractor to coordinate the new driveway and patio elevations. This helped ensure water would be directed where it needed to go instead of creating pooling or drainage problems around the new outdoor space.

It’s the kind of work homeowners may not immediately notice in the finished photos, but it plays a major role in how well a patio performs years after installation.

Replacing an Old Deck With a Large-Scale Patio

Removing the deteriorating deck opened up an opportunity to completely change how the homeowners could use their backyard.

Rather than simply replacing the deck with another structure of a similar footprint, we created an expansive patio totaling more than 1,800 square feet. A combination of Techo-Bloc stone pavers and flagstone brings variation and natural character into the design while helping define different areas throughout the space.

Creating More Than One Place to Gather

One of our favorite aspects of this project is that the main patio isn’t the only destination.

Near the shed, we installed a separate retaining wall and seating area, giving the homeowners another place to spend time outdoors. Stepping stones and surrounding landscaping help connect this area back to the main patio and make the entire yard feel intentional rather than like a collection of separate features.

We were also able to reuse some of the homeowner’s existing materials within the landscaping. Incorporating what was already on the property helped the new installation feel more established while giving those materials a new purpose within the redesigned space.

Lighting a New Patio in Chester County

A patio shouldn’t stop being useful once the sun goes down.

Path lights and step lights were incorporated throughout the project to make it easier and safer to move through the space in the evening. The lighting also adds another layer to the design, highlighting pathways, changes in elevation, stonework, and landscaping after dark.

These details may seem small compared with the scale of the patio itself, but they’re often what make an outdoor space feel truly finished.

Coordinating the Details for One Cohesive Backyard

Not every element of an outdoor renovation needs to be completed by the same contractor. What matters is making sure the pieces work together.

The homeowners wanted a distinctive fence around the patio that required a specialty installation outside of our scope, so they hired another contractor for that portion of the project. We also coordinated with the company repaving the driveway so the finished elevations and drainage plan would complement our patio installation.

The result is a backyard where the patio, driveway, fencing, retaining wall, walkways, landscaping, and lighting all feel connected.

For us, that’s an important part of taking on a large-scale hardscaping project. We’re not only thinking about the stone we’re installing. We’re considering how that stone relates to the house, the grade of the property, existing features, future improvements, and the way the homeowner wants to use the space.
